The Joy of Keeping an Emergency Food Supply

emergency food supply“The best food storage is not in welfare grain elevators but in sealed cans and bottles in the homes of our people. What a gratifying thing it is to see cans of wheat and rice and beans under the beds or in the pantries of women who have taken welfare responsibility into their own hands. Such food may not be tasty, but it will be nourishing if it has to be used.”

These words, spoken by Gordon B. Hinckley, reflect the importance of having an emergency food supply. They also reflect the general opinion of food storage for many people: do what has to be done, keep enough food to survive, but don’t expect it to taste good. We live in a fortunate time, however. Not only is food storage easier to obtain, but it is also good to eat. With all the stress that has been placed on having enough emergency food for you and your family, there is becoming no excuse not to comply. Keeping an emergency food supply is not only essential, but it is a joy.

Keeping a Food Supply is Convenient

Food storage is easier than ever before. There has been an explosion in companies in recent years that offer ready-made food storage supplies. What this means is that all you have to do is go online, or to a store, and you can pick up everything that you need to have your own food supply. Freeze-dried and dehydrated foods, along with new packing techniques also mean that food takes up even less space than ever before.

Keeping a Food Supply is Important

President Hinckley was not the only prophet to talk about the importance of food storage. We are still being told regularly just how important it is to prepare for the future. We do not know what lies ahead, and the emergency that we prepare for might not be a worldwide disaster, but could be something as simple as a lost job. Whatever emergency comes your way, you will be glad that you were prepared for it.

Keeping a Food Supply is a Joy

Not only will we be happy with the knowledge that our family’s safety is secured, we are now able to know that our emergency food supply does not have to be boring, bland and flavorless. Can you imagine spending days living on nothing but oatmeal and beans? The surge in food storage companies has meant that our options are far less limited. Ready made, freeze-dried meals are a great idea, as they take up very little space, are still nutritious, and offer perfectly seasoned, delicious meals. So there you have it, food storage is no longer a chore, it is a joy. There is no excuse not to have it!

Food storage is a tricky topic for me. I love it BUT in the last 10 years, I’ve lived in 4 different countries. Most of the moves were made on our own dime–meaning there was no earthly way we could afford to ship food storage abroad. Also, in many of the homes we’ve lived in–including a 700 square foot apartment with 6 people living in it, we’ve had very little room to store extra food. Logistically, I haven’t been able to do a full year worth of food storage. However, I have kept a 3-month supply. Those last few months before a move, we then eat our food storage.

I am currently living in Saudi Arabia and more than food, I worry about our water supply. Water is scarce in this desert country, and everyone–especially Saudis use it extravagantly. We buy big 5-gallon jugs of water, but those also take up a lot of space. I’m still working on a satisfactory solution.
